Template for Sizing Envelopes
This plastic template is the real McCoy, the same thing your postmaster uses to check the size of your envelopes to make sure they fit the very precise size requirements for first class mail.
And I won't kid you here. You can go to your own post office and request this same template and they will probably give one to you for free. If they can figure out what you're asking for. Don't look for this handy dandy template up there with the notecards and neckties, which the Post Office seems to think people are willing to pay for. Or among the Priority Mail envelopes. It's probably not there.
Ask your postmaster for the "Letter-Size Mail Dimensional Standards Template." If he or she gives you a blank look, ask for item "D-12050251 Rev. A" and see if the person behind the counter can find it.
I've asked at several large post offices for a template like this and have been told they don't have anything like it. Of course, if you look closely, you can sometimes see the edges of one tucked behind the computerized scale where they print out meter labels for mail.
So, I have to be honest and tell you that you can probably get at least one of these for free if you ask.
But, if you don't regularly go to the post office, or you live miles from your post office, or you're just too busy to take the time to try to turn one of these handy dandy templates up -- Whiskey Creek will gladly sell you one (and no, they are not free in great quantities!).
They measure 8 by 13 inches and have a nice slot to be sure your card isn't too fat (more than a quarter of an inch) which requires additional postage even if the envelope meets size regulations. All lettering is in black.
Template Front
Place your lower left envelope corner on the corner mark of lower left corner. If the upper right corner of your envelope hits the gray shaded area of the template, your envelope can be mailed for one first class stamp provided it meets weight requirements.
If the upper right corner of your envelope does not touch the gray area, it will require extra postage over and above one first class stamp.
The pass-through slot in the template measures the depth of your envelope. If the envelope cannot pass through the slot, it will also require extra postage.
Template Back
Of course, you could buy several and give them to your stamping buddies for gifts!
I mail these Priority because they are surprisingly heavy, yet fit inside the wonderful "$3.85 no matter what it weighs" Priority letter-sized envelope.
Two templates: $8.95 plus $3.85 for a total of $12.80
Three templates: $11.95 plus $3.85 for a total of $15.80
